WHAT IS THE SALVATION ARMY?

The Salvation Army is an integral part of the universal Christian
Church. Our Message is based on the Bible.
Our motivation is the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We
combine a fervent joyous religious faith with a practical efficient social
service...not just in Preston but world wide!

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SALVATION ARMY MEETINGS?

The Christian message is shared in a down to earth, easy to
understand and enjoyable manner. Music plays an important part, in
song, both by our songsters (choir) and congregation, as well as the
band.

The accent is on enjoying a personal faith in a personal friend,
Jesus Christ

DO I HAVE TO WEAR UNIFORM?

The short answer is "NO". The uniform is worn by members who, of
their own free will, have made a full commitment to become Soldiers
of The Salvation Army but the uniform is not compulsory. Many
people who attend do not wear uniform, but are still able to share in
Christian fellowship having chosen The Salvation Army as their
Church.

CAN ANYONE ATTEND?

Quite simply "YES". The Salvation Army knows no barriers of race,
education, social position, age or sex. Consequently, you, your
family, friends and neighbours are all welcome.

WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE ARE SALVATIONISTS?

Very little difference from most people! They come from all classes
of society, and all parts of the world. There are Salvationist teachers,
sportsmen, dustmen, and politicians, illiterate Salvationists and
Salvationists with doctorates. There are Salvationists whose
parents, grandparents and great grandparents were attached to the
Army, Salvationists who, but a few weeks ago belonged to many
different churches, or to non at all.

Community Outreach

  • Daily from our premises on Harrington Street, we distribute food parcels to people who have hit hard times, accepting referrals from many other organisations.

  • We are often asked to assist with support in finding accommodation. The Salvation Army has a number of residential centres in the Northwest. We are able to give assistance with transport to these projects. We also assist people to be reunited with their families. As a last resort we always keep a stock of sleeping bags for people to sleep on a friends sofa or unfortunately on a park bench.

  • From our 'Care and Share' Charity shops we not only sell clothing at lower prices than other charity shops, we give clothing, textiles etc. to those in need.

  • Many enquiries are made asking for help in tracing family members. The Salvation Army runs an International Family Tracing Service.
